Chain Reaction: exploring the
link between problem gambling and domestic and family violence
Chain Reaction project will undertake research
to determine the links between problem gambling and family and domestic
violence. The project will focus on women affected by family and
domestic violence, who themselves are victims, who seek solace and
safety through gambling; and women whose partners who have developed
gambling problems which have contributed to family breakdown and
violence.
The research will focus on the geographical area
of Brimbank LGA. A crucial factor in the initial stages of problem
gambling is the fact that many women affected by family and domestic
violence, see gambling venues as a safe place to spend their time.
There is a proliferation of hotels and clubs in the Brimbank LGA,
and as a consequence, support workers in the various programs at
Community West, report that many people present with problems which
are associated with gambling.
The research will apply a women-centric methodology
as much of the current problem gambling research has failed to address
women’s experience of gambling using a gendered analysis and
thus renders them invisible. The research findings, which will be
presented in a report and widely distributed to the western region,
and will inform policy and service delivery responsiveness and innovation.
Chain Reaction is funded by the Victorian Government
under the 2003-2004 Local Community Partnership Project.
